Bio/Profile |
I was Born in Bradford, Yorkshire, UK - Mum sewing machinist and Dad mainly manual work but he did sing in light opera - he had a nice voice I remember. Mum and Dad split so me and mum formed my early years. In the UK I ended up as Assistant Manager in a Wallboard & Building materials wholesaler and eventually with tertiary education gained certs in Building, Business and Accounting. Joan and I got married in 1968. After Joan's mum died a couple of years later, we decided to move to Australia and have never looked back. Joan was a teacher and I ended up in Credit Management in Comalco. Our family started at Penrith (me, Joan, and our children Kerrie and Simon) but my promotion as Area Manager took us to Brisbane for ten years....that's when I met a real estate guy Brian Fordham who changed my life by introducing me to Barbershop Harmony and the rest is history, so they say. The lead in a barbershop octet called The Barbertones was returning to Canada about the time that I moved About 1991 the Barbertones split and my quartet 'A Cut Above' formed Brisbane's "Rivercity Clippers Barbershop Chorus". Also in 1991 the first ever BHA (then called AAMBS) convention was held on the Gold Coast and my quartet won a bronze medal. Due to Comalco selling off its downstream business Comalco Aluminium Supply the need for a Brisbane credit department disappeared so my choice was redundancy or move back to Sydney. We moved back to Sydney in 1992 as Joan didn’t really like the Brisbane climate. When we were settled in Glenhaven, I searched the web for a barbershop chorus found and joined the SydneySiders Men's Barbershop chorus. Then in 1997 with Dick Costin and Not sure how long afterwards but I sang with Gary Hardy, Reg Hill and Dave Rumsey in a quartet that Gary named the Amazing Greys. We successfully sang at many functions over the years and that early group made a locally distributed CD – all to help raise funds for the SydneySiders Express chosen charity-Oncology Unit, Children's Hospital, Westmead, NSW Over the years Gary, Reg and Dave have moved out of Amazing Greys due to health or location reasons. Amazing Greys now consists of me singing Lead, with Richard Denton Bass, Jim Bradshaw Baritone and Graeme Long Tenor. I’m also in a mixed quartet singing lead called Mixed Agenda with Doris Ward tenor, Richard Denton bass and Col Goddard baritone. Barbershop Singing is one of the best things to happen to my life and it is great to be able to be part of a group small or large making great wonderful harmony. |
